Our Journey – Part Three – What Made Us Decide to Travel

About 3 years ago this coming March, we interviewed 22 couples for a book we were writing.  The focus of that book, Richer Together: Secrets to Working, Living, and Loving Side-by-Side, was about entrepreneurial couples and how they are successful as business partners as well as partners in life.  One couple, in particular, really stood out to us – Rhonda & Brian Swan, The Unstoppable Family.  Just one of the things that was mentioned during that conversation was to listen to your partner – even when you think their idea is crazy.

We were living in Westminster, CO at the time, and I remember hanging up from our Skype conversation, looking at Rob and saying something to the effect of, “Why don’t we do that?  Why don’t we just sell everything we own and travel the world like they do?”

We could see so many different places.  Boegley would get to experience the world like his older brothers never had – like most kids never get to.  The opportunity to teach him to appreciate the differences on a global scale was at our fingertips, and we wanted to take on a new challenge together.  Travel = transformation.  We were incredibly excited at the prospect.

After having gone through a few really tough years, we were more than ready for a big change…even bigger than moving across the country and leaving all of our family behind. That day we agreed that we’d do it.  However, both of our oldest sons were juniors in high school at the time – one of whom lived with us (Note: Our kids are his, hers and ours…so my oldest son was with us.)

This pushed us to wait until they both graduated.  The plan was to start traveling once we knew they were both off to college or whatever adventures their adult lives would bring them.  Ah…but our plans changed a bit.

We just didn’t feel quite ready the next year, so instead we opted to move down to Colorado Springs.  It took us another year to get Rob back out of his corporate job…then, we began to think about where we wanted to go.  Our plans of traveling were finally back on the table.

Last winter, we made the decision to finally get rid of everything – almost – and set off on a full-time traveling lifestyle.  First stop…the beach!

Yep…the above photo is one we snapped on the beach less than a five minute walk from our townhouse.  Yep…we got to go over there almost every day.  Yep…it was as beautiful and turquoise as the photo – more often than not.  No more cold weather. No more snow.

Yet, just after three months, we were hankering to get moving again.  Where to next? We decided it was time to jump into house sitting and pet sitting.  That literally opened doors for us that we never would’ve imagined before. Um…and will bring some snow and cold weather back into our lives – time to buy new winter coats.

As I write this post today, we’re sitting in Albuquerque, New Mexico taking care of a sweet little dog named Fritz.  He accepted us right away, which is always fantastic for both the fur babies and for us.  And, we get to spend time exploring the area from the Sandia Mountains to Old Town Albuquerque to the little town of Magdalena.

Now, let me move this post in a different direction.  Since we also like to share with you about our spirit guides and signs from the Universe I’ll tell you that the synchronicities and the signs that showed up for us the first couple of days after we decided to take on the house sitting journey blew us away (and we’ve experienced A LOT – so this was pretty big).  The names we were getting connected to were often almost identical to our guides names.  The number “3” showed up so many times over the course of those first few days Rob and I were stopping to show each other every half hour or so…I’m not kidding.  Threes are HUGE for us – especially “33” and “133”.  To see them show up again and again and again – especially in odd places that were clearly connected to our planning – was downright uncanny.

The signs haven’t stopped showing up either.  We continue to see them.  With traveling by car we often see “133”, “33” or “333” on license plates.  Now sure, if we just saw them once in a while it would be cool, but we see these almost every time we come up behind another vehicle or someone cuts in front of us and gets our attention…yep, their plate number will have duplicate 3s.  This is just one example – the list is far too long to share it all here.

Here’s the thing – you don’t have to be transpersonally or metaphysically focused.  Your spiritual views can be very different.  But, you still need a plan.  If you want to see signs and confirmations and if you want your travel adventures to go well, you need to trust and you need a plan.  That’s exactly why we put together the Six Steps to Live a Life of Freedom. If you have dreams of traveling full-time, part-time or just escaping the 9-5 then get access to the training by clicking here – it’s free!

We’ll continue to share parts of our journey with you – not only going forward, but also how we got to where are now – the tough stuff and the amazing stuff.

On top of that, we’re going to be sharing more and more about our spirit guides with you.  If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be living the life of our dreams.

Life is an adventure – live it with no more boundaries,

Our Journey – Part Two – When Family Turns Their Back

Today would’ve been Rob’s father’s birthday, but he unexpectedly transitioned from this life two years ago.  Rob took time this morning to do a special meditation on the beach at sunrise in honor of his father.

Our guides have come through more than once telling Rob that his dad is helping us from the spiritual dimensions, but that was not something we would’ve expected.

Six years ago, when we had to close our brick and mortar business, numerous members of Rob’s family turned from us.  His dad turned his back and there was next to no relationship with that side of the family for four years.  The why isn’t important now, but we all know that sometimes hard feelings, misundertandings, and/or lack of communication can bring about rifts between family as well as dear friends.  The truth can often look different to different people

In early spring 2014, we got a message from our guides telling us it was time to reconnect to Rob’s parents.  We weren’t sure why, but we reached out to his mom and made plans to see them again during our visit to our hometown later that spring.  We’re very grateful that we did.  It was a healing experience.

No one would’ve ever dreamed that Charlie would leave this world a couple of months later.  So, today on his birthday and on a day that has a huge impact on so many people in the USA, as it’s 9/11, Rob decided to spend some quiet time on the beach focusing on his father.

Happy Birthday Charlie!  And, lots of love to Rob’s mom, Jenny!

Ready, Set, Go…Um..Reset, Now Go!

Launching into the Sea of Life (on your traveling or entrepreneurial journey)

Sometimes you think you’re ready to launch into the sea of life or the sea of being a new entrepreneur, but you suddenly realize you just might be going in the wrong direction!

On Saturday, August 20, 2016, we had the privilege of witnessing a Loggerhead Sea Turtle nest hatch in Panama City Beach.  *The above video is one from Sebastian, FL, via Ashley Taylor on Youtube. We’re sharing it as it offers you the opportunity to see what it was like.  We couldn’t video as it was at night, and you cannot use lights around the baby turtles.

This shows the inital cave-in and first signs that the nest might hatch last night. Picture taken by Rob.

The amazing little guys and gals wait on all of their brothers and sisters to come out of their shells, then they wait for the sun to go down (usually).  Then, they make a grand entrance into the world together, and launch into the sea.

It’s about preparation.  They develop and grow before letting everyone see them.  They also have some extra support before they take off on their trek.  In other words, they still have part of their yolk attached.  That should sustain them long enough to swim a mile or two out into the sea until they reach the seagrass where they will find food.

In your business (or even in planning your initial transition to becoming location independent and traveling), you need to have a plan in place.  You need to develop it, allow it to grow just enough and have some level of reserve so you can reach your initial destination.

What if you do it wrong?

The nest we saw last night had somewhere around 100 babies.  A few started to head toward the ocean – like they should.  However, the hotel lights and some other street lights on the well populated Front Beach Road disoriented most of them.  So, the majority of the group headed west and north…they all needed to head southward.  The few that started to go the right way, succumbed to “peer pressure” and followed the rest going in the wrong direction.

In this situation, had it not been for TurtleWatch.org volunteers, Lorna & Jenn, collecting them all…and transporting them later last evening to a private, dark beach, this entire nest would probably not had any chance at survival.

So, what if you make a wrong turn in your business launch or new program launch? After all, it truly is pretty easy to get distracted by all of the sparkly lights – “Do this!” “Go here!”  “Don’t do that!” etc.  A lot of people think they need to follow the rest of the herd because if they are all going that way then they must surely be correct – right?

Obviously, when you consider the turtle babies, you can see that blindly following the masses is possibly not the best idea.  So, what do you do?

Make sure you have a coach or mentor…someone to “save” your butt.

Having someone help coach you or guide you is a key factor in helping know whether or not you are heading in the best possible direction for YOU.  They may not literally pick you up, gently tuck you in a cooler and give you a whole new shot, but a coach can help you reset your mind set

Always, always find someone you resonate with and you believe you can trust.  Read their books, follow them online, watch their videos, participate in their classes or workshops, and perhaps, actually hire them as YOUR coach.  But, if you believe you can just brazenly do it fully on your own, you might just end up in the sand dunes and get gobbled up by a crab or some other critter.

Don’t let your dreams of freedom fizzle.  You deserve to swim baby swim!

For Rent – Showing the House

For Rent – So Many People Love the House

For Rent

41 Days and Counting…Update…

Wow! We showed the house today. Mind you we just rented when we came to Colorado Springs two years ago, but as part of our lease we agreed to show the house to prospective new tenants once we decided to leave. So, we turned in the paperwork earlier this week…and two days later my phone started blowing up – phone calls and text messages galore.  Finally, after about the 4th person called to ask to schedule a showing, we decided on two impromptu open houses.  We had at least 10 potential renters come through today…that makes at least 20 people who wandered through the house today. We’re expecting just as many tomorrow!  And, at least four of the families today were instantly calling the property management company to apply.

Apparently, it is super hard to find a nice house for rent here right now.  There were a few families and people we really liked, but it isn’t our decision.  What an interesting afternoon though.  And, Boegley was a super host.  He loved welcoming people in and had a blast showing the kids how you can see downtown from our backyard as well as Pikes Peak.

We’re getting closer…and closer…

beaches-of-south-walton-florida-photo-7

Of course, the first stop will be Indiana, so we can see family…and I can have a much needed girls night out with some dear friends!

Then, we’ll make our way to the Emerald Beaches of Florida.  OMG – this is getting super exciting super fast 🙂

Stay tuned because over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing some amazing pictures from here in Colorado though.  And, then we’ll share our travel journey with you.

Happy Weekend,

Janelle

No More Moving Stuff

No More Moving Stuff

painting of colorful feet with flip-flops on sandy beach

We’re so ready for the exciting journey we’re about to undertake.  However, this time it’ll be a lot different than when we started four years ago.  On May 3, 2012, we loaded up in the car, hugged my parents good-bye and pulled out in the rain for Colorado leaving our hometown in Indiana behind.  Ha!  As is often typical, we realized we needed one more thing and had to turn around just a couple of miles down the road!  But, two days later we’d arrived in the Rockies to start a new chapter.

Moving stuff...no more!

Indiana 2012 – We’re moving stuff…no more!

Anthony went from a high school of around 400 to one with about 2000.  Boegley started in public school, but that didn’t last long before we moved him to a Waldorf school and then homeschooling via an umbrella school the next year.  Common core…and a shy kiddo in the classroom – need I say more?

We made a lot of new friends and had some wonderful experiences between Denver and Boulder.  Then in the summer of 2014, we moved to Colorado Springs for a bit. Our intent was to move again last year, but we opted to stay one more year.  Now, we can hardly wait to leave the beautiful, snow-capped mountains for tropical, sandy beaches.  Oh, yeah.  Flip flops all year round!

Though we’ve downsized time and time again as we made each of our moves (especially after losing most everything in the economic crisis around 2010), this downsizing is A LOT bigger.  Now, we just want clothes for a couple of weeks at a time, laptops, iPads, iPhones and each other.  That’s pretty much it.  The rest is going.  Okay, there are a few pictures and some drawings we still have the kids did when they were little…those things will get stored at one of our parents’ homes.

But, otherwise, we’ll be traveling super lite from here on out.

So, many gorgeous places we’ve been, and we’ll revisit some of them before we leave for good in less than 80 days, but we’ll always be grateful for the beauty that lies in the glorious terrain of Colorado.

Follow us here, on Facebook and on Instagram, so you can keep up with where we are, how we’re getting to travel while working online and worldschooling our youngest.

Life’s an adventure – so live it!
